"Ballet is a fine art for sensitive natures and a metaphoric art for poetic natures
Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.
The history of creation
The idea of creating a ballet based on the tragedy "Romeo and Juliet" by W. Shakespeare was suggested by S. Radlov to S. Prokofiev the artistic leader of the Kirov Theater in Kirov, St. Petersburg. Passionate about the subject, he starts working on his new masterpiece which he finished rapidly. In 1936 the ballet score is presented to the Council artistic Council of Bolshoy Theatre in Moscow who rejected it because of "the peasant character" of music. But this has not served any way an impediment to presenting ballet to the public what has been achieved two years later in the Czech town of Brno, followed by the premiere in his homeland - Russia.
